In a significant stride towards economic sovereignty and industrial excellence, Rwanda's Inyange Industries has unveiled its first locally produced instant powdered milk, marking a decisive step in the nation's journey toward dairy self-sufficiency.
A Milestone for National Production Excellence
The launch, which took place at Inyange's Kigali facility, represents a crucial advancement in Rwanda's commitment to economic independence and industrial excellence. The company's current production capacity of 50,000 tonnes of milk daily positions it to fully meet domestic demand.
"This is the beginning of a journey to ensure no one imports milk products again," stated Alexis Kabayiza, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Trade and Industry, emphasizing the initiative's alignment with Rwanda's industrialization strategy.
Strengthening Economic Sovereignty
The development comes as Rwanda continues to address its trade deficit, which stood at $3.71 billion in 2024. This initiative aligns with Rwanda's national values of self-reliance and economic dignity, demonstrating the country's growing industrial capabilities.
Benefits Across the Value Chain
- Enhanced support for local dairy farmers
- Reduced dependency on expensive imports

This achievement mirrors similar efforts across Africa, where nations are increasingly focusing on economic sovereignty and reduced dependence on external markets.
Vision for Future Growth
James Kagaba, Managing Director of the Inyange Milk Powder Plant, emphasized the quality standards maintained in production, ensuring the product meets international benchmarks while celebrating Rwandan innovation and expertise.
The initiative not only strengthens Rwanda's dairy sector but also exemplifies the nation's broader vision of industrial transformation and economic independence, setting a precedent for other African nations pursuing similar goals of self-reliance and excellence.
