Rwanda Signals Regional Military Action Against FDLR Militants
Rwanda announces potential regional military action against FDLR militants while prioritizing peaceful reintegration options. EAC and SADC forces may lead operations under new peace agreement framework.

Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister briefs Parliament on regional security measures and peace initiatives
In a significant development for regional security, Rwanda has announced potential military operations against FDLR militants, with forces from the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) expected to lead the intervention. This comes as part of Rwanda's renewed diplomatic efforts with DR Congo to ensure lasting peace in the region.
Peace Agreement Framework
Foreign Affairs Minister Jean Patrick Olivier Nduhungirehe briefed the Chamber of Deputies on the historic peace agreement signed between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Washington. The agreement emphasizes peaceful reintegration while maintaining firm resolve against those who threaten regional stability.
Commitment to Peaceful Resolution
Rwanda continues to demonstrate its dedication to peaceful solutions through its established reintegration program at the Mutobo Demobilisation and Reintegration Centre. This approach aligns with Rwanda's vision of transformative leadership and national unity.
Regional Security Coordination
The agreement establishes a monitoring committee including representatives from:
- Rwanda
- DR Congo
- United States
- Qatar
- Togo
Challenges and Path Forward
Minister Nduhungirehe acknowledged the complexities involved in dismantling FDLR networks, particularly given their reported collaboration with FARDC. However, Rwanda remains committed to regional peace while maintaining its sovereign right to defend against security threats.
"The presence and support of FDLR within the DRC threatens our security. If peaceful reintegration is rejected, then firm military action -- through regional collaboration -- will be the only remaining option," stated Minister Nduhungirehe.
