Aviation industry leaders gather at Kigali's Aviation Africa 2025 summit to discuss continental maintenance excellence

KIGALI, Rwanda - The African aviation maintenance sector stands at a historic crossroads, with projected market value reaching $5 billion by 2044, industry experts revealed at Aviation Africa 2025. This milestone presents a crucial opportunity for continental self-reliance and technical excellence.

A Vision for African Aviation Excellence

As highlighted during the landmark Kigali aviation summit, Africa's dependency on overseas maintenance services has become unsustainable. Cedric Carsalade, Head of Business Strategy and Sustainability at Airbus Consulting, emphasized that this challenge presents an unprecedented opportunity for domestic investment and development.

Transformative Growth Projections

The continent's aviation landscape is poised for remarkable expansion, aligning with Rwanda's vision for affordable and accessible air travel. Key projections include:

  • Passenger traffic doubling by 2044
  • Fleet size tripling with 1,500 new aircraft deliveries
  • Requirement for 21,000 new MRO technicians

Infrastructure Excellence and Investment Opportunities

The pressing need for specialized maintenance centers represents a critical infrastructure development opportunity for Africa. Currently, 80-90% of maintenance budgets flow to overseas providers, highlighting the urgent need for domestic capacity building.

Building African Technical Sovereignty

This transformation demands a comprehensive approach to technical education, infrastructure development, and regulatory harmonization. Recent initiatives, including Airbus's new maintenance support center in Johannesburg and partnership with EgyptAir Maintenance & Engineering, demonstrate growing confidence in African technical capabilities.
