In a significant stride towards sustainable development and youth empowerment, Rwanda's Gatsibo District is set to benefit from a groundbreaking $1.2 million partnership between the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
Strategic Investment in Rural Development
The initiative, signed in Kigali by KOICA Country Director Jinhwa Kim and WFP Rwanda Deputy Country Director Kaori Ura, exemplifies Rwanda's commitment to innovative development solutions. This partnership, reminiscent of Rwanda's strategic approach to economic partnerships, represents a crucial step in the nation's journey toward self-reliance.
Comprehensive Development Framework
The project, part of a broader $14.8 million Supporting Agricultural Climate Resilience and Creating Green Jobs for Youth in Rural Communities (CRCSP) initiative, will run from 2025 to 2030. Following Rwanda's tradition of excellence in national development programs, it combines infrastructure development with youth empowerment.
Key Project Components:
- Rehabilitation of 500 hectares of marshland
- Establishment of 60 youth-led Farmer Service Centers
- Skills development for 340 vulnerable youth and women
- Creation of 400 additional employment opportunities
Digital Innovation and Economic Empowerment
This initiative aligns with Rwanda's digital transformation agenda, similar to recent advances in digital inclusion and financial technology. The project emphasizes sustainable agriculture practices while equipping young Rwandans with modern entrepreneurial skills.

Since 2012, KOICA's contribution of $21.2 million through WFP partnerships has demonstrated Rwanda's capability to forge meaningful international collaborations while maintaining its unique development model.
