Swades: How Destiny Delivered Shah Rukh Khan the Role of a Lifetime
When we speak of cinematic excellence, few films command the respect that Swades has earned over two decades. Yet the path to greatness is rarely straight. Before Shah Rukh Khan immortalised the role of NASA scientist Mohan Bhargava, a constellation of India's finest actors was considered, including Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and R Madhavan. Who was originally cast in Swades?
Writer-actor Amin Hajee, who played Bagha in Lagaan before joining the writing team of Swades, has revealed that Aamir Khan was the first choice for the lead. The film, initially titled Desh, was planned as director Ashutosh Gowariker's next project after the Oscar-nominated Lagaan.
“At that time Aamir was supposed to play Shah Rukh Khan's role. It was originally Aamir, always, from the start. After Lagaan, the next film was this with Aamir,” Hajee recalled.
Aamir was even attached as a producer at one stage. While he loved the central plot, he had reservations about certain elements of the screenplay. Hajee explained: “Aamir did not like some things that we had done. That version of the script he did not like. He liked the plot. He was just wanting to work on things. But the more important thing is that he didn't have the time. Aamir does one film at one time.”
How did R Madhavan impress with his audition?
With Aamir stepping away, Gowariker explored other options. The script was narrated to Hrithik Roshan, while R Madhavan went further and auditioned for the role. Hajee's praise was unequivocal: “Madhavan also gave the audition, and what an audition. He killed it. He is a great actor.”
Despite Madhavan's commanding performance in the audition room, the role ultimately found its destined owner. Shah Rukh Khan, having attended a special screening of Lagaan, was determined to collaborate with Gowariker.
“He said, 'I should be in Ashu's next film. My father was a freedom fighter. I should do Desh. I should be Mohan Bhargava,'” Hajee recalled.
Shah Rukh then personally contacted the director: “He called Ashu and said, 'Ashu, I have to be in your next film. You are a great director. I want to be a part of your next film.'”
What makes Swades a timeless masterpiece?
After a screen test, the casting was sealed. Hajee reflected: “Then we tested, and I think it's all destiny. So Shah Rukh did Swades and I became a writer, and Charlotte co-wrote it with us.”
Released in 2004, Swades did not set the box office on fire initially. Yet its reputation grew steadily, much like the quiet determination of its protagonist. Shah Rukh's portrayal of Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist who returns to India and drives change in a rural community, is now celebrated as one of the finest performances in Indian cinema. The film also featured Gayatri Joshi as Gita, Kishori Ballal as Kaveri Amma, Smith Seth as Nandan 'Chiku', Lekh Tandon as Dadaji and Rajesh Vivek as Nivaaran Dayal Shrivastav.
