Netflix released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on Oct. 20, 2026, and the new season has already drawn praise as a true improvement on the acclaimed 2022 anime. According to Polygon, the 10-episode sequel is richer, more rewarding, and downright better than its predecessor.
Director Kai Ikarashi returns to Night City with teams from CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger, delivering another collision of corporate cruelty, dangerous technology, and people pushing past their limits. Polygon's critic wrote that the familiar ingredients gain new weight through an extraordinary ensemble cast whose relationships carry the season.
What is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 about?
The season opens with a heavily augmented man succumbing to cyberpsychosis after a gig goes wrong. But this time the man survives. Once a celebrated edgerunner known as King, Weak Kingsley, voiced by Clancy Brown, emerges as a shell of his former self, his hulking arms replaced by frail robot limbs.
Weak's story is one of four threads that writers Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka weave together. The others belong to Roman Carax, a 12-year-old filmmaker who records Weak's breakdown and refuses implants himself; Talia, a young woman more chrome than organic flesh; and D, a vengeful netrunner whose entire Nomad clan was wiped out.
Polygon reported that the connections to the first season place this story after Edgerunners but likely before the events of Cyberpunk 2077, expanding the world in ways that do not feel forced.
Why critics call the new season better
Polygon's review found the first season emotionally frustrating because the doomed romance between Lucy and David Martinez left little room for the supporting cast. The sequel corrects that. Each intersection between the four leads gives the characters another reason to care about someone beyond themselves.
Weak's concern for Talia carries particular weight. He sees in her the same intoxicating pursuit of power that nearly killed him, and his warning comes from bitter experience. As Polygon noted, everybody has an upper limit, however fiercely they insist otherwise.
Capri gives Edgerunners a new spark
The season's wildest addition is Capri, a digital entity voiced by Brittany Lauda, whom D encounters through an experimental chip. Rendered as splashes of neon pinks and greens with jagged shapes that constantly morph, Capri looks as though she wandered in from another show entirely. Polygon wrote that by the end of episode 3, viewers may wonder whether she is the most dangerous thing ever to exist in the Cyberpunk universe.
Yet Capri also brings out unexpected joy in D, a haunted man whose dead friends visit him in nightmares. Roman's camera captures both the grief and the delight, giving their friendship real substance beyond the convenience of pairing an action hero with a cameraman.
Music and emotion
The soundtrack matches the first season's iconic score. Polygon's critic admitted coming close to tears several times, mostly thanks to the songs, which let action sequences feel momentous while keeping loneliness close to the surface.
The review concluded that beneath the spectacular violence lies an affection for people who still want to love, create, and connect. Finding someone worth sharing a life with, rather than becoming a legend, is what makes the season unforgettable.
